When I was 19, I became a fully licensed insurance sales agent for United Insurance (UI) working from the San Pablo CA branch. The branch had 20 to 24 licensed agents and 4 sales managers. I was one of their top 5 new business producers. During the 3+ years that I worked for UI, I learned how to sell, listen, plan, compete, manage accounts, and picked up other customer service disciplines.
Then I changed careers and pursued warehousing and logistics. I took on a position as a warehouse and sales manager at a business in Oakland, an experience which gave me the opportunity to increase my knowledge of business operations, setup 3 warehouses throughout California, work with vendors and customers, attend trade shows, manage sales and warehouse crews, and to compete with other locations in order to see who could sell the most.
Later I went on to work for 800-Software, a subsidiary of Digital Equipment Corporation a fortune 100 company in the nineties. When I worked at 800-Software I gained experience working in a corporate environment, had a feel for how structured ERP systems should work, and a chance to interact with professionals and department groups. One department that interested me the most was purchasing. What I saw was that Purchasing was at the front end of business managing the flow of supply to keep operations running, had exposure to the latest technology, and responsibilities to support new or changing projects. It was a group heavily tasked in getting things done quickly, on time, and had to be done with little hassle. It was around this time knew that that was the type of environment I wanted to be in; I soon wanted to be a buyer! I had the ability to understand the functions of supply chain management with ease.
Since my experience with 800-Software, I have held several positions supporting my career. I have practically worked all sides of operations, production, logistics, procurement, and have done very well in supporting the departments / companies which I have served.
As time goes by, I continue to collaborate with specialists of diverse styles and backgrounds. This includes assisting, supporting, and mentoring other professionals climbing their career ladders in supply chain management. I drive towards self and business improvement by doing what is currently being done better, to positively impact the lives of people, customers, business, and environment.
